What is encoding?

The main points to remember

GSM, Unicode, Automatic... a bit barbaric terms but which have a significant impact on the display of your SMS messages. This article presents the differences between these different encodings but, if you are not a specialist, just one thing to remember: trust OxiSMS and opt for the "automatic" mode.

With this mode OxiSMS will automatically choose the encoding mode that best suits your message!

In detail

The encoding corresponds to the technical format of your SMS messages. Two modes exist:

  1. GSM mode: it is the most economical mode but it does not support certain characters (particularly some accents). It allows you to send text messages of up to 160 characters.
  2. The Unicode mode: so-called "universal" it allows you to send almost all existing characters. However, each character takes up more "space" and therefore SMS messages cannot exceed 70 characters.

In OxiSMS a third mode is proposed, it is the "automatic" mode. We strongly advise you to use it because OxiSMS will automatically choose the encoding that best suits your message.

If your SMS contains characters that are not compatible with the GSM mode, OxiSMS will propose you to use the unicode mode. If you dont follow this recommendation, the received message will not be the same as the one you sent. For example, the "ê" will be replaced by "e".
